The Negative Effects of Candy on Kids (Plus Healthy Alternatives!)
Dear Parents,
As a nutritionist, I'm here to share the truth about the negative effects of candy on your child's health. Candy is often the go-to treat for kids, but the consequences of consuming too much sugar and artificial ingredients can be detrimental to their long-term well-being.
My Kid's Experience with Candy
As a parent, I have witnessed firsthand the negative effects of consuming too much candy on my own child's health. One time, my child ate a large amount of candy and experienced severe nausea, stomach pains, and even vomiting. Another time, my child had a sudden nosebleed after consuming a significant amount of sugar.
This terrifying experience led me to research the negative effects of candy on kids' health and find healthier alternatives for a sweet treat.
The Negative Effects of Candy on Kids' Health
Candy is loaded with refined sugar, which contributes to a range of health problems, including tooth decay, obesity, and diabetes. It causes massive blood sugar spikes, leading to a sudden surge in insulin levels. This surge can cause changes in blood pressure and blood vessel dilation, which is why nosebleeds are a surprisingly common side effect of consuming too much candy!
Here's a closer look at some common candy ingredients and their negative effects:
- Sugar: Excessive consumption of sugar causes energy crashes and contributes to the development of metabolic issues. According to the American Heart Association, children should consume no more than 6 teaspoons (25 grams) of added sugar per day.
- Artificial Colors: Artificial colors (such as Red 40, Yellow 5, and Blue 1) have been strongly linked to hyperactivity and other behavioral problems in children, as well as allergies and asthma.
- High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS): HFCS is a cheap sweetener linked to obesity, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. It is also often made from genetically modified corn.
- Trans Fats: Many chewy candy products contain hydrogenated oils, which are high in trans fats that raise bad cholesterol levels.
Healthy Alternatives for a Sweet Treat
Fortunately, there are many healthy alternatives to candy! Fresh fruit, dried fruit, whole-milk yogurt, smoothies, dark chocolate, and cheese provide important nutrients like fiber, protein, and antioxidants without the crash.
Warning: Not all alternatives are created equal. While whole fruit is a great option, fruit juice is essentially pure sugar water lacking fiber. Many store-bought granola bars and "fruit snacks" are just candy in disguise. Be sure to read ingredient labels!
Make Your Own Keto Gummy Bears!
A fun and healthy alternative is making homemade candies using natural ingredients like berries and stevia. My recipe only requires 2 cups of berries, 1/2 cup of water, 4 tsp of gelatin, 2 tsp of Erythritol, a pinch of vanilla, and a pinch of salt.

How Can We Encourage Our Kids to Eat Healthier?
A lot of parents ask me, “How do I get my kids to eat healthier?”
Here’s a secret: kids need to understand what food actually does to their bodies. When children realize that food impacts not only their bodies but also their mood and focus, it gives them the motivation to make better choices.
Try teaching them the difference! For example, foods with protein—like eggs, chicken, and dairy—build muscle and keep them calm and satisfied. But foods high in sugar make them tired, irritable, and hungry again quickly.
The Weekend Experiment: Over two days, offer a protein-based breakfast one day (like eggs and cheese) and a sugary breakfast the next (like cereal or something sweet). Have them observe how they feel throughout each day. Ask questions: Were they calm? Focused? Or did they feel tired or cranky? This lets kids experience the difference for themselves, so they start to understand why healthy food is important!
Stop the Sugar Rollercoaster. Start Healing.
By promoting healthy eating habits and encouraging moderation, you can help your child develop a lifelong appreciation for nutritious foods. You don’t have to navigate this process alone!
